1. During my A-Level’s I worked as designer and project manager for a sculpture in St. Luke’s Primary School. This project involved the year 5 group through workshops to create a final design, and it also brought in ‘POLE Associates’, and landscape architect ‘Bloomin Marvellous’ for consultation to certify this structure would not fall under the weight of climbing children! The sculpture was delivered under budget at £4,750.
2. The sculpture project was initiated through school workshops with the year 5 group, where we used the elements of 'earth, wind, fire, and water' to develop ideas about texture and materiality.
3. The students then developed models around the ideas from each element, and these were presented, to then be transformed through my interpretation into a workable design model for a sculpture. It was at this stage we applied for funding through 'Awards for All', and received it, in order to then take the design forward and start the technical design.
4. The final proposal before amendments to bring construction and material costs under budget is below, and incorporated a water feature which would send water up the central column, with water coming down a circular piece. The material was sought to be stainless steel to be able to stand for a long time, and to shine in the sunlight from where it stood.
5. The final design is composed of angular steel components, and has the structural integrity to withstand the weight of 60 school children climbing on it! The end result was successful in that it proved to myself and the school children that anything is possible if we put our mind to it, and there are no boundaries to success.
